Red Leaves

they said you're alone, under siege in your home
and they whispered a plea: "lord don't set 'em free!"
"we built their locks around our key so let terror rule them as it please!"
many years ago you rushed through the door and your brother, uncovered, cried out: "I am violence given form, a man-made puncture wound in this world! a demon begs 'round my knees - I'll bury him just like a seed! and what will grow - I don't know - I won't be there!"
and you stayed around and we went underground
now he's afraid of the dark - all he needs is a spark
"all I see now is smoke. don't know how long before I choke in a forest of fallen trees. if you got the fire, I've got the leaves and I'll burn it down - you till the ground - what we lost might be found

eight men and one boy - now two will live without their mothers
they swallow pills around a fire so they can pretend they're brothers
the endless road is like a rope, calling out to the younger
it's a deceiver - just follow the leaders!
"but they're only shadows! so what if I wander?"
it's the same as any other day: just waiting, hoping to feel different
who sees wolves running through the grass? and not the leaves or what grows in between so far from home?
whose dream is that?
the mice run through the grass and we haven't come home yet

Mr. Mouse

you've traded your days for scraps and nights too drab to soften the hours you ran until you collapsed
you never reached the end of the maze
so you're headed nowhere - how long 'til you get there?
with your best moves behind you, pigeonholed and bound to lose, it becomes clear your own fear was the only thing you had left to sell (your blood, your sweat, your tears - all bought)
with dreams of promotion, you go through the motions again and again
"here he comes to slave away!"
focus-grouped and compliant, you helped 'em build a better mousetrap
the modern mouse don't get no rest - time to put your product to the test
what do you live for now?

Greenwood

the walls smelled like smoke when you came to her home
and she had misplaced a child's name and face
you always swore the strains that you heard crawling out her mouth were an organ screaming out and you knew you'd seen it before when she lied still on the floor
the priest taught The Word while his flock hung likes birds rolling through the sky, unable to divide
and you wondered why anyone would sit and shiver, get swept away by the pull of grief's river
you didn't understand when it happened again and again
the box you wouldn't open
a tongue tied for a friend
now there's new plans for an end
maybe you'll be ready then
if only I could
at Greenwood we stood - the graves all looked the same
I'd rather be a flame
